My next guest is the legendary KK Downing. They say you can’t keep a heavy metal legend down. Although it’s been nearly a decade since guitarist and songwriter K.K. Downing departed Judas Priest, the famous band he cofounded and played with for 40 years, he was never really going to retire. It was only a matter of time before he reclaimed the spotlight. I caught up with KK to talk about KKS Priest his new project with Tim Ripper Owen and their upcoming album Sermons of the Sinner. Downing assembled Owens, Mills, former Voodoo Six bassist Tony Newton, and DeathRiders/Cage drummer Sean Elg to create Sermons Of The Sinner, an album that celebrates his classic metal roots and encourages us to cherish those iconic pioneers whom we still have with us. He jokes that KK’s Priest is “like a new old band. Or an old new band.” We talked at length about the new album, his legal battles with Judas Priest, touring over the next few years and all things metal. It took me a while to track Roy down. Roy Venkataraman was a name I heard often when I was growing up in India in the 80’ and 90’s. I knew of him as the Indian guitar player for Bob Marley’s legendary band the Wailers. He is widely considered reggae royalty, at least here in India. Roy started his career in Bombay, playing with some of the most popular bands in the country and then moved to the U.S where he garnered a wealth of experience playing and recording with artists including Atlantis and Keith Benson. He also played with groundbreaking indojazz band Divya at some of the biggest jazz festivals internationally including the Jazz Yatra in India. Roy also did concerts and worked with legendary pianist Louis Banks as his main sessions guitarist for a few years. His own album Lifelines features world renowned musicians Clive Stevens, Randy Brecker, Adam Holzman and Rachel Z amongst many others.Roy was invited to join Bob Marley’s Wailers band and toured the world with them for years. He has scored music for well known filmmaker Govind Nihalani and toured with Jeremy Spencer, cofounder of Fleetwood Mac and has also recorded with various well known artists worldwide.Roy now lives in Sydney, Australia. He has shared stages with Simply Red, Third World, Xzibit, Maxi Priest, Sly and Robbie, UB40, Lauryn Hill, Julian Marley, Steel Pulse and countless others and is guitarist with widely popular New Zealand reggae band House of Shem. I had the privilege of listening to some of his new music that’s an eclectic mix of jazz, sufi and electronica. The music you hear in the intro to this podcast is from Roy’s album Horizontal Life. I caught up with Roy and we traced his multi decade career from Mumbai to Sydney.Follow Tales from the Road on Facebook Instagram Listen to more episodes on Spotify Apple Podcasts Google Gaana AudibleAlso check us out on our website tftrmedia.comHosted and produced by Vikram Chandrasekar and Moving Pictures Media Vikram aka The Concert Photographer is an internationally published concert photographer, videographer and podcast host.
Marty Friedman is one of the most unique, engaging and adventurous musicians to ever pick up an electric guitar. Marty has profoundly influenced musicians over the years from the 80’s when he teamed up with fellow guitarist Jason Becker in Cacaphony to his time in Megadeth in the early 90’s, where he contributed to some of their most most seminal albums. Marty moved to Japan in 2003 and has since pursued a solo career and now is a much in demand guitar player, tv show host and is a national celebrity of sorts. A couple of years ago Marty was officially recognised by the Japanse Government, as an Ambassador of Japanse Heritage. In the last 10 years Marty has released a trilogy of albums the Tokyo Jukebox volumes where he covers popular Japanese pop songs but rearanged Marty Style. The albums while they retain their melodic style, clearly has a friedman watermark all over it. In this conversation with Marty he reflected on his much written about crosscontinental life discussed the Tokyo Jukebox Trilogy and his efforts in taking japanse music to the west. We also look back on his live show in India ,his approach to playing and collaborating with Indian musicians and a whole lot more.
