After the massive violence reported in Khargone on the occasion of Ram navami on Sunday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had taken a stern stand on the violence during the Ram navami procession in which stonepelting took place, houses were set on fire and shots were fired. Over the past few days, Bageshwar Dham, a temple in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, has been the talking point on TV debates and on social media. At the centre of this is the head of the temple and religious preacher Dhirendra Krishna Shashtri. Shashtri, a selfstyled godman, is known to travel across the country for religious addresses known as katha. In a significant verdict, the Supreme Court Thursday ruled that the recommendations of Goods and Services Tax GST Council are not binding on the Union and the states and only have a persuasive value. The Supreme Court today upheld the governments 2016 note ban decision which phased out old Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes by a 4:1 majority. The apex court said that the decisionmaking process was not flawed. A fivejudge Constitution bench of the apex court, headed by Justice S A Nazeer, said that there has to be a great restraint in matters of economic policy and the court cannot supplant the wisdom of the executive by a judicial review of its decision. However, the dissenting judge said that the order was unlawful and vitiated.

The rights group Oxfam International has released the India supplement of its annual inequality report on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. The rupee plunged by 16 paise to close at an alltime low of 82.33 against the US currency in early trade on Thursday due to a surge in US bond yields, riskaverse sentiment among investors, and firm crude oil prices. The NCERT has removed portions about the 2002 Gujarat riots, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement and Mughal courts from its class 12 textbooks as part of its syllabus rationalisation exercise. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise a litre each for the second day in a row on Wednesday. Petrol price in Delhi has gone up to Rs 97.01 per litre as against Rs 96.21. Diesel prices has increased from Rs 87.47 per litre to Rs 88.27, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers. Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes. A record 137day hiatus in rate revision ended on March 22 with an 80 paise per litre increase in rates. Prices had been on a freeze since November 4 ahead of the assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab a period during which the cost of crude oil soared by 30 per barrel. Today, AAP workers and leaders across the country are staging protest against the arrest of Delhi DyCM Manish Sisodia.
