Bleak House - Part 1

Bleak House - Part 1

In Chancery London. Michaelmas term lately over, and the Lord Chancellor sitting in Lincoln’s Inn Hall. Implacable November weather. As much mud in the streets as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill. Smoke lowering down from chimney-pots, making a soft black drizzle, with flakes of soot in it as big as full-grown snowflakes—gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun. Dogs, undistinguishable in mire. Horses, scarcely better; splashed to their very blinkers. Foot passengers, jostling one another’s umbrellas in a general infection of ill temper, and losing their foot-hold at street-corners, where tens of thousands of other foot passengers have been slipping and sliding since the day broke (if this day ever broke), adding new deposits to the crust upon crust of mud, sticking at those points tenaciously to the pavement, and accumulating at compound interest. Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls deified among the tiers of shipping and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city.

David Copperfield - Part 1

David Copperfield - Part 1

I Am Born Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I re-cord that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o’clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously. In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and by some sage women in the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibility of our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that I was privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to all unlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Fri-day night. I need say nothing here, on the first head, because nothing can show better than my history whether that prediction was verified or falsified by the result. On the second branch of the question, I will only remark, that unless I ran through that part of my inheritance while I was still a baby, I have not come into it yet. But I do not at all complain of having been kept out of this property; and if anybody else should be in the present enjoyment of it, he is heartily welcome to keep it.

Jungle Tales of Tarzan

Jungle Tales of Tarzan

TEEKA, STRETCHED AT luxurious ease in the shade of the tropical forest, presented, unquestionably, a most alluring picture of young, feminine loveliness. Or at least so thought Tarzan of the Apes, who squatted upon a low-swinging branch in a near-by tree and looked down upon her. Just to have seen him there, lolling upon the swaying bough of the jungle-forest giant, his brown skin mottled by the brilliant equatorial sunlight which percolated through the leafy canopy of green above him, his clean-limbed body relaxed in graceful ease, his shapely head partly turned in contemplative absorption and his intelligent, gray eyes dreamily devouring the object of their devotion, you would have thought him the reincarnation of some demigod of old. You would not have guessed that in infancy he had suckled at the breast of a hideous, hairy she-ape, nor that in all his conscious past since his parents had passed away in the little cabin by the landlocked harbor at the jungle's verge, he had known no other associates than the sullen bulls and the snarling cows of the tribe of Kerchak, the great ape.

THIRTY YEARS AGO, Marseilles lay burning in the sun, one day. A blazing sun upon a fierce August day was no greater rarity in southern France then, than at any other time, before or since. Everything in Marseilles, and about Marseilles, had stared at the fervid sky, and been stared at in return, until a staring habit had become universal there. Strangers were stared out of countenance by staring white houses, staring white walls, staring white streets, staring tracts of arid road, staring hills from which verdure was burnt away. The only things to be seen not fixedly staring and glaring were the vines drooping under their load of grapes. These did occasionally wink a little, as the hot air barely moved their faint leaves. There was no wind to make a ripple on the foul water within the harbour, or on the beautiful sea without. The line of demarcation between the two colours, black and blue, showed the point which the pure sea would not pass; but it lay as quiet as the abominable pool, with which it never mixed. Boats without awnings were too hot to touch; ships blistered at their moorings; the stones of the quays had not cooled, night or day, for months.

Mr Standfast

Mr Standfast

I spent one-third of my journey looking out of the window of a first-class carriage, the next in a local motor-car following the course of a trout stream in a shallow valley, and the last tramping over a ridge of downland through great beech-woods to my quarters for the night. In the first part I was in an infamous temper; in the second I was worried and mystified; but the cool twilight of the third stage calmed and heartened me, and I reached the gates of Fosse Manor with a mighty appetite and a quiet mind. As we slipped up the Thames valley on the smooth Great Western line I had reflected ruefully on the thorns in the path of duty. For more than a year I had never been out of khaki, except the months I spent in hospital. They gave me my battalion before the Somme, and I came out of that weary battle after the first big September fighting with a crack in my head and a D.S.O. I had received a C.B. for the Erzerum business, so what with these and my Matabele and South African medals and the Legion of Honour, I had a chest like the High Priest's breastplate.

Our Mutual Friend - Part 1

Our Mutual Friend - Part 1

In these times of ours, though concerning the exact year there is no need to be precise, a boat of dirty and disreputable ap-pearance, with two figures in it, floated on the Thames, between Southwark bridge which is of iron, and London Bridge which is of stone, as an autumn evening was closing in. The figures in this boat were those of a strong man with ragged grizzled hair and a sun-browned face, and a dark girl of nineteen or twenty, sufficiently like him to be recognizable as his daughter. The girl rowed, pulling a pair of sculls very eas-ily; the man, with the rudder-lines slack in his hands, and his hands loose in his waistband, kept an eager look out. He had no net, hook, or line, and he could not be a fisherman; his boat had no cushion for a sitter, no paint, no inscription, no appli-ance beyond a rusty boathook and a coil of rope, and he could not be a waterman; his boat was too crazy and too small to take in cargo for delivery, and he could not be a lighterman or river-carrier; there was no clue to what he looked for, but he looked for something, with a most intent and searching gaze.

The school at which young Charley Hexam had first learned from a book—the streets being, for pupils of his degree, the great Preparatory Establishment in which very much that is never unlearned is learned without and before book—was a miserable loft in an unsavoury yard. Its atmosphere was op-pressive and disagreeable it was crowded, noisy, and confus-ing half the pupils dropped asleep, or fell into a state of wak-ing stupefaction the other half kept them in either condition by maintaining a monotonous droning noise, as if they were performing, out of time and tune, on a ruder sort of bagpipe. The teachers, animated solely by good intentions, had no idea of execution, and a lamentable jumble was the upshot of their kind endeavours.

It was a foggy day in London, and the fog was heavy and dark. Animate London, with smarting eyes and irritated lungs, was blinking, wheezing, and choking inanimate London was a sooty spectre, divided in purpose between being visible and in-visible, and so being wholly neither. Gaslights flared in the shops with a haggard and unblest air, as knowing themselves to be night- creatures that had no business abroad under the sun while the sun itself when it was for a few moments dimly indicated through circling eddies of fog, showed as if it had gone out and were collapsing flat and cold. Even in the sur-rounding country it was a foggy day, but there the fog was grey, whereas in London it was, at about the boundary line, dark yellow, and a little within it brown, and then browner, and then browner, until at the heart of the City— which call Saint Mary Axe—it was rusty-black. From any point of the high ridge of land northward, it might have been discerned that the lofti-est buildings made an occasional struggle to get their heads above the foggy sea, and especially that the great dome of Saint Paul's seemed to die hard but this was not perceivable in the streets at their feet, where the whole metropolis was a heap of vapour charged with muffled sound of wheels, and en-folding a gigantic catarrh.

Plashwater Weir Mill Lock looked tranquil and pretty on an evening in the summer time. A soft air stirred the leaves of the fresh green trees, and passed like a smooth shadow over the river, and like a smoother shadow over the yielding grass. The voice of the falling water, like the voices of the sea and the wind, were as an outer memory to a contemplative listener but not particularly so to Mr Riderhood, who sat on one of the blunt wooden levers of his lock-gates, dozing. Wine must be got into a butt by some agency before it can be drawn out and the wine of sentiment never having been got into Mr Riderhood by any agency, nothing in nature tapped him.

Hauptmann Fritz Schneider trudged wearily through the somber aisles of the dark forest. Sweat rolled down his bullet head and stood upon his heavy jowls and bull neck. His lieutenant marched beside him while Underlieutenant von Goss brought up the rear, following with a handful of askaris the tired and all but exhausted porters whom the black soldiers, following the example of their white officer, encouraged with the sharp points of bayonets and the metal-shod butts of rifles. There were no porters within reach of Hauptmann Schneider so he vented his Prussian spleen upon the askaris nearest at hand, yet with greater circumspection since these men bore loaded rifles—and the three white men were alone with them in the heart of Africa.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY We were seated at breakfast one morning, my wife and I, when the maid brought in a telegram. It was from Sherlock Holmes and ran in this way: Have you a couple of days to spare? Have just been wired for from the west of England in connection with Boscombe Valley tragedy. Shall be glad if you will come with me. Air and scenery perfect. Leave Paddington by the 11:15. "What do you say, dear?" said my wife, looking across at me. "Will you go?" "I really don't know what to say. I have a fairly long list at present."

It was now exactly seven months since the balloon voyagers had been thrown on Lincoln Island. During that time, notwith-standing the researches they had made, no human being had been discovered. No smoke even had betrayed the presence of man on the surface of the island. No vestiges of his handiwork showed that either at an early or at a late period had man lived there. Not only did it now appear to be uninhabited by any but themselves, but the colonists were compelled to believe that it never had been inhabited. And now, all this scaffolding of reasonings fell before a simple ball of metal, found in the body of an inoffensive rodent! In fact, this bullet must have issued from a firearm, and who but a human being could have used such a weapon?

The Mysterious Island - Part 3

The Mysterious Island - Part 3

It was now two years and a half since the castaways from the balloon had been thrown on Lincoln Island, and during that period there had been no communication between them and their fellow-creatures. Once the reporter had attempted to communicate with the inhabited world by confiding to a bird a letter which contained the secret of their situation, but that was a chance on which it was impossible to reckon seriously. Ayrton, alone, under the circumstances which have been re-lated, had come to join the little colony. Now, suddenly, on this day, the 17th of October, other men had unexpectedly ap-peared in sight of the island, on that deserted sea!

The Thirty Nine Steps

I returned from the City about three o'clock on that May afternoon pretty well disgusted with life. I had been three months in the Old Country, and was fed up with it. If anyone had told me a year ago that I would have been feeling like that I should have laughed at him; but there was the fact. The weather made me liverish, the talk of the ordinary Englishman made me sick. I couldn't get enough exercise, and the amusements of London seemed as flat as soda-water that has been standing in the sun. 'Richard Hannay,' I kept telling myself, 'you have got into the wrong ditch, my friend, and you had better climb out.' It made me bite my lips to think of the plans I had been building up those last years in Bulawayo. I had got my pile—not one of the big ones, but good enough for me; and I had figured out all kinds of ways of enjoying myself. My father had brought me out from Scotland at the age of six, and I had never been home since; so England was a sort of Arabian Nights to me, and I counted on stopping there for the rest of my days.

Think And Grow Rich

Think And Grow Rich

Think And Grow Rich - (Introduction) Think and Grow Rich was written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill, promoted as a personal development and self-improvement book. Hill writes that he was inspired by a suggestion from business magnate and later-philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. While the book s title and much of the text concerns increased income, the author insists that the philosophy taught in the book can help people succeed in any line of work, to do and be anything they can imagine.

This universe of ours, the universe of the senses, the rational, the intellectual, is bounded on both sides by the illimitable, the unknowable, the ever unknown. Herein is the search, herein are the inquiries, here are the facts; from this comes the light which is known to the world as religion. Essentially, however, religion belongs to the supersensuous and not to the sense plane. It is beyond all reasoning and is not on the plane of intellect. It is a vision, an inspiration, a plunge into the unknown and unknowable, making the unknowable more than known for it can never be "known". This search has been in the human mind, as I believe, from the very beginning of humanity. There cannot have been human reasoning and intellect in any period of the world's history without this struggle, this search beyond. In our little universe, this human mind, we see a thought arise. Whence it arises we do not know; and when it disappears, where it goes, we know not either. The macrocosm and the microcosm are, as it were, in the same groove, passing through the same stages, vibrating in the same key.

The best definition given of Bhakti-Yoga is perhaps embodied in the verse: "May that love undying which the non-discriminating have for the fleeting objects of the senses never leave this heart of mine — of me who seek after Thee!" We see what a strong love men, who do not know any better, have for sense-objects, for money, dress, their wives, children, friends, and possessions. What a tremendous clinging they have to all these things! So in the above prayer the sage says, "I will have that attachment, that tremendous clinging, only to Thee." This love, when given to God, is called Bhakti. Bhakti is not destructive; it teaches us that no one of the faculties we have has been given in vain, that through them is the natural way to come to liberation. Bhakti does not kill out our tendencies, it does not go against nature, but only gives it a higher and more powerful direction. How naturally we love objects of the senses! We cannot but do so, because they are so real to us. We do not ordinarily see anything real about higher things, but when a man has seen something real beyond the senses, beyond the universe of senses, the idea is that he can have a strong attachment, only it should be transferred to the object beyond the senses, which is God. And when the same kind of love that has before been given to sense-objects is given to God, it is called Bhakti. According to the sage Râmânuja, the following are the preparations for getting that intense love.

A word for you. Remember always, I may not see you again. Be moral. Be brave. Be a heart-whole man. Strictly moral, brave unto desperation. Don't bother your head with religious theories. Cowards only sin, brave men never, no, not even in mind. Try to love anybody and everybody. Be a man and try to make those immediately under your care, namely Ram, Krishnamayi, and Indu, brave, moral, and sympathising. No religion for you, my children, but morality and bravery. No cowardice, no sin, no crime, no weakness — the rest will come of itself. . . . And don't take Ram with you ever or ever allow him to visit a theatre or any enervating entertainment whatever.

In studying the religions of the world we generally find two methods of procedure. The one is from God to man. That is to say, we have the Semitic group of religions in which the idea of God comes almost from the very first, and, strangely enough, without any idea of soul. It was very remarkable amongst the ancient Hebrews that, until very recent periods in their history, they never evolved any idea of a human soul. Man was composed of certain mind and material particles, and that was all. With death everything ended. But, on the other hand, there was a most wonderful idea of God evolved by the same race. This is one of the methods of procedure. The other is through man to God. The second is peculiarly Aryan, and the first is peculiarly Semitic.

We had not yet all assembled there, but the Master's heart was always in his work, so he commenced at once to teach the three or four who were with him. He came on this first morning with the Bible in his hand and opened to the Book of John, saying that since we were all Christians, it was proper that he should begin with the Christian scriptures.

One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in my life is to pay as much attention to the means of work as to its end. He was a great man from whom I learnt it, and his own life was a practical demonstration of this great principle I have been always learning great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secret of success is there; to pay as much attention to the means as to the end. Our great defect in life is that we are so much drawn to the ideal, the goal is so much more enchanting, so much more alluring, so much bigger in our mental horizon, that we lose sight of the details altogether.

Karmabhoomi

It is pleasant to me to observe, Watson, that you have so far grasped this truth that in these little records of our cases which you have been good enough to draw up, and, I am bound to say, occasionally to embellish, you have given prominence not so much to the many causes celebres and sensational trials in which I have figured but rather to those incidents which may have been trivial in themselves, but which have given room for those faculties of deduction and of logical synthesis which I have made my special province."

Anatomy Of Froth

Anatomy Of Froth

In 2007, a global financial and economic crisis broke out that shook the world. It spun the globe into a common vortex. Whether it was loss of equiry value or real estate, salary downgrades, job loss or lack of market demand in business, the crisis affected every one, everywhere. The scale of this crisis was unlike any other economic upheaval since the Great Depression of 1929-1933. IT deeply impacted the global economic and financial order, as well as the advent of global trade and the mobility of capital. The long-term effects of the crisis will continue to effect our lives for many years to come. What and who caused the crisis? Was it wall Street? Was it global economic imbalances built on an undervfalued Yuan and an overvalued Dollar? Or was it the loose monetary policy which caused asset bubble? More importantly, what should we do to forecast and forestall crises such as this in the future? Unfortunately, discussion on these vital concerns have largely remained the preserve of aademics and experts. The lay person has come to understand the crisis only in terms of its tangible impact on home and workplace- and through pop-speak such as sub-prime mortgages and credit -default- swaps'. This book attempts to demystify the crisis for the layman and make him a participant in discussions regarding our collective future. The basic causes of the crisis, though complex, are often shadwed by the various emotions which accompany its aftermath. This book is an attempt to understand the fundamental nature of the crisis in terms of broader trends rather than determining guilty companies, institutions and individuals. Frosted Glass

Frosted Glass

Frosted Glass comprises one story cycle consisting of 14 stories and one poem cycle consisting of 21 poems. The Stories, set in Calcutta, bring to the fore the darkness lurking in the human psyche and bare the baser instincts. The stories, compactly written and marked by insightly dialogues that raise contemporary issues like man-woman relationships and its strains, moral and ethics, environmental degradation, class inequality, rapid and mass-scale unmindful urbanisation, are devoid of sentimentalisation. The result is they remained focused and move around the central character who is named Rahul in all the stories. We encounter the events that shape, mar, guide Rahul's life and also the lives of those around him, making us question the very essence of existence. Rahul symbolises modern man; he is not just one character, but all of us rolled into one. The story cycle stands out for two reasons - its brilliant narrative and the dispassionate style with which betrayal in personal relationships and resultant loneliness has been handled. The poems weave a maze of dreams, images, reflections and stories. They are written in a reflective and many a time in a narrative tenor within a poetic idiom. The poems are inseparable in a hidden way and are magically sequenced like various kinds of flowers in a garland or chapters of differing shades in a novel. Calcutta features in some of the poems like the looming backdrop of Gotham City in a Batman movie.

The most common causes of high cholesterol are all related to high fat diets, inactivity, and obesity. Less commonly, genetic causes too can decrease the ability of the body to metabolize cholesterol or cause the liver to produce too much. Memory- Awakening The Potential

Memory- Awakening The Potential

We all wish we possessed a sharp memory. How often do we envy those with clear recall and wondered how they do it while we fumble with names and facts on an everyday basis. Memory is the warehouse, where all static and emotional data is stored. Believe it or not, our brain is bombarded with sixty thousend stimuli each second. The problem starts here; the brain memory has a huge capacity but that space is overstuffed with unnecessary thoughts. People often say that they forget things very fast or that they find it extremely difficult to remember things. The real reason for this is that their memory is overloaded with redundant information which is like virus data obstructing the smooth functioning of the mind, making it weak. Meditation, mental exercises, reiteration, physical exercise which increases oxygen flow to the brain - all these and more, are the lessons we learn in achieving that strong memory we all admire and want.

Pentacles

Pentacles

Pentacles comprises one long story and four short poems by Sabarna Roy. The work delightfully bridges the gap between the mundane and arcane writings of today and provides an interesting, yet intellectually stimulating, treat for the discerning reader. New Life is a long story written from the perspective of a successful adult whose mother had deserted the family for another man. The teenage angst and the scars it has left behind on the psyche of the protagonist are subtly reflected in the character. The different elements and characters of the story are beautifully interwoven to produce an intense and compelling story of an adult haunted by the trauma of being deserted by his mother. The work is interspersed with thought-provoking views on issues like love and socio-economic conditions in India. The traditional rhyme and metre dominated poems are on love, loss and longing. Unshackled by the bonds of rhyme and metre, Sabarna s free verses evoke the stark reality of urban life, hitting you straight in the guts. The use of everyday urban imagery adds to the appeal of the compositions. The concrete prison of urban life and the unfulfilled desire to escape to a simple life is aptly brought out in The Tower. The other poems of the collection are more biographical in nature with the protagonist being the member of the fairer sex. The free verses sketch out their life story with its attendant pathos, poignancy and logic. The best part of all the compositions is that the reader will definitely identify with the poet and will, in one form or other, have similar stories to narrate.

Worship Essentials For Puja

Worship Essentials For Puja

If anyone offers me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, and water, I receive that, offered in devotion by the persons whose soul is disciplined. ~ Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita. The various religions of world have different rituals and objects used in worship. Offerings to the Divine vary according to region, tradition or availability. But only one stream of thought runs though them all like a pure, flowing river. The predominant idea behind all offerings and prayers and puja (rituals of worship), is the surrender of oneself to the All Powerful, Absolute and Almighty and to seek His blessings, protection and forgiveness in our passage through life. Many of our traditions and rituals of worship have been lost over time- victims to the drift of cultures. Today, amidst the rush of modern living, our ways of the worship have become practice-by-rote, without the individual understanding the actual meaning of either the object used or the ritual and ultimately , the form of worship itself. With the loss of this rich legacy of deeper meaning, puja is bereft of that special communion with God, which all humans desire. This accessible and beautifully presented book , re- acquaints us with the meaning and purpose behind the objects we use in our puja , whether at home or in the temple. It gently informs and adds meaning and value to that most private of all human practices-worship.

Karna The Unsung Hero Of The Mahabharata

Karna The Unsung Hero Of The Mahabharata

Then, the exquisitely handsome body of Karna of generous acts, who should have been worthy of perpetual happiness, let go of that refulgent head with the kind of extreme reluctance evinced by a wealthy person in leaving his own prosperous home, or by a saintly one in forsaking virtuous company. [The Mahabharata, Karna-Parva; 91.53-54] In these lines of evocative pathos, the Mahabharata pays its ultimate tribute to Karna, who has hardly a rival in world literature to match his credentials as a uniquely nuanced heroes' hero – towering above Hector in righteous valour, above Arjuna in generosity, and above all else in conscientious attachment to the principles of noblesse oblige. This is the intriguing story of a hero who, despite being born to royalty was, like the Biblical Moses, cast away by his mother. Brought up lovingly by a lowly charioteer and his wife, his whole life was one great struggle against cruel destiny, and against all the odds placed in his way by the inequities of his time. In the process, he blazed a new trail of glory, emerging as the adorable exemplar of purushakaara (manly effort), with tremendous achievements both as a man and also as a warrior. Yet society never gave him his due, despite being as upright as Yudhishthira, as strong as Bhima, as skilful as Arjuna, as handsome as Nakula and as intelligent as Sahadeva. Rebuffed and insulted by society at every step, he developed some flaws engendered by a defiant spirit and nurtured by association with the evil designs of Duryodhana, his benefactor prince. But those very contrarieties seem to enhance and enliven the dramatic appeal of his character as one of the brightest stars of the Mahabharata's star cast. Written in an engagingly flowing style and with an imaginative transcreation of the epic storyline, Karna: the Unsung Hero of the Mahabharata should strike a responsive chord in the minds, specifically of today's Mahabharata aficionados and generally of all lovers of exalted human drama.

The Hawk Hunters

The Hawk Hunters

High on the Imamgarh battlements, Jalal-ud-Din, Mughal Commander of Samana Fort, was hauled by Khalsa soldiers to the massive cannon and lashed to its muzzle. His insolent glare dissolved into dread at the order ‘Fire!’ His eyes dilated – white pupils starkly visible for an instant. Then he was blown to smithereens. This was the first assault against the tyranny of foreign invaders in over five centuries. As the cannons blew the condemned criminals to oblivion, their roar thundered in Wazir Khan’s council chamber and reverberated thoughout Muzzam’s Mughal Empire. Several years earlier, Wazir Khan, the Mughal Governor of Sirhind, had snared and then brutally executed Guru Govind Singh’s two young sons, sending a shock-wave of revulsion that ignited a raging inferno in the Punjab. The Guru had commanded Banda Bahadur to liberate the Punjab from the Mughals’ tyrannical yoke. Banda set out from Nanded with only twenty-five soldiers, but as he entered Punjab, thousands thronged to rally the Nishan Sahib. Banda Bahadur hurled these unstrained Punjabi volunteers against Wazir Khan’s powerful army. Among them was Shamsheer, a Sikh peasant-warrior, who too threw himself whole-heartedly into the fierce struggle for freedom; going on to become a celebrated Cavalry Commander of the Khalsa Army. Amidst the strife and turmoil Shamsheer and a young Muslim noblewoman from Sirhind fell deeply, helplessly in love. Would he succeed in winning her hand? Would Banda Bahadur’s raw, ill-equipped sparrows be able to hunt down the mighty Mughal hawk? ‘The Hawk Hunters’ tells their story in this fast-paced, action-packed saga of great courage, nobility and supreme sacrifice. Above all, it is a celebration of the triumph of the human spirit over ruthless brutality and personal tragedy.

The Mythos Of Jaladhi Varchasva

The Mythos Of Jaladhi Varchasva

Varchasva – signifying absolute dominance – is the first in the Trilogy of The Mythos of Jaladhi. It is a tale of grit, determination and valor of five princes, handpicked and tutored by Maharishi Devang, their spiritually endowed mentor, in the inhospitable and treacherous terrain of Mount Anshuman. Their innate talents fostered by rigorous discipline and harsh training, their body and mind honed to perfection and exceptional prowess, the princes develop into an invincible Five Man Army of redoubtable warriors. Worthy wielders of divine weapons, their mission is to overcome the occult power of Himsa, abominable master of Seven Deadly Sins and the mighty rakshasa generals. Varchasva is the seedling that sprouts into the episodic saga of The Mythos of Jaladhi – a saga that draws its sustenance from the righteous yet vanquished heroes of lore – the illustrious antagonists from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata; who now lend their phenomenal powers to the just cause of the princes, in a different age and world and in completely different avatars altogether! This indeed is heady old wine in sparklingly new bottle – the super-human drama of an epic struggle that culminates in triumph of good over evil, of love over hate, of hope over despair! A gripping fantasy with the evocative power to transport today's readers into a world of epic déjà vu!!

It is just their life story. Perhaps, it could be yours.

The World Is In Me

The World Is In Me

It was a self-portrait with me standing in front of a wall-size mirror and staring at my reflection. I had a confused face because what I could see in the mirror was not what was actually around me. It depicted a basement on which I was standing. The mirror made me feel that a whole lot of other things existed around me. I could not see them though. But I had an explanation for them. It could only mean one thing: that they existed as a part of a different dimensional world!

Thousand Unspoken Thoughts

Thousand Unspoken Thoughts

“Don't use the phone. People are never ready to answer it. Use poetry.” ― Jack Kerouac Thousand Unspoken Thoughts’ brings together the collection of poetry of an amateur poet who uses words to see through the world. Prerna, though being an Advocate by profession believes that writing is where her heart lies. The collection is a passage through her mind, where innumerable dreams and aspirations, are brought down to ink. Her writing is not confined to any age group; hence, no censor certificate is required. Keeping that thought aside, she believes in the power of ink, and her poems stand as witness.

While The Code Compiles

While The Code Compiles

The IT industry, to the outside world, looks to be the epitome of all good things in life. That is the place where the super intelligent youth of India go to work. A techie's life is the most ideal life—fat paychecks, beautiful campuses to work within and more beautiful colleagues to roam around with! That is the general perception! Well, there are exceptions! This is the story of such an 'exceptional' software firm—the Infopro Limited. None of the keywords from the above paragraph— 'fat paycheck', 'beautiful campuses', 'beautiful colleagues', 'super intelligent folks' —apply to Infopro. In fact, the Infopro employees who utter such nonsense words as these may even risk losing their jobs! Beware, apart from producing 'software programs', this 'software factory' produces intense laughing gas too as a by-product! If you are allergic to 'laughing gas', please stay away from this book! And, if you are from the IT industry, pick 2 copies and gift one to that never-smiling, arrogant boss of yours and see the instant, positive change in him and, more importantly, be assured of a better appraisal next time round!

The Cubicle

The Cubicle

'The Cubicle’ is about the aspiration of a writer, to write about life (or the lack of it) in the IT industry. Weighing the options, he decides to join an IT company to write about it. With fake experience, he manages to do so. Within months at work, he gets a long term onsite opportunity, which he desperately avoids strategically. He even gets politically entangled, not in the office politics – which is obvious anyways – but in Indian politics. He excels in his career and even completes the book, until he falls in a dilemma over a career making decision. Someone with no prior IT experience survives and excels in a top IT company? I must be kidding. Or this has to be the best super hero story? Or the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'fiction' written ever? Or a book full of lies starting from this synopsis? Or this synopsis is a typo error, really big time? It isn't that tough, if you know the shortcuts inside 'the cubicle'. The Cubicle is a fictional non-fictional satire. The fictional elements are added to the book to make you believe the ‘unbelievable(s)’; with a very thin line of story woven around. Sarcasm and Humour are intended – Laughter will be asking for too much, but smile(s), and tips and tricks to make your career better than what it is now, guaranteed. NOT an autobiography.

No Love Stories, Please!

No Love Stories, Please!

Many a times, it so happens in life that nobody is wrong. Nobody’s intention is wrong for anybody. Yet everybody is unhappy. The entire environment gets filled with frustration and negativity. It’s ok until this point. Yet as things continue, to see each other happy, one of them becomes bad in the eyes of the other and even starts doing bad things, just to see the other person happy. Perhaps seeing these sad conditions of a human being’s life Shakespeare has said, “Time itself is corrupt.” He adds that there is no such thing as a hero or villain, as most of the time a hero is not a hero, but a villain. Sometimes, the villain himself turns out to be a hero, which means sometimes in just one character, we find both the hero and the villain. It is just not possible to imagine a hero and a villain as a separate entity, because time itself is corrupt.

Out Of The Blue

Out Of The Blue

Love is understanding, mutual confidence, sharing, and forgiving. Love is invisible. It is a true feeling; it cannot be seen or measured. Sometimes, the voice of the heart is much stronger than all the other sounds and words spoken without feelings. Love leads a person to the path of truth but sometimes, the truth spoken for love can lead us and the life of our love to the never-ending separation and the conclusion is only destruction. Welcome to ‘Out of the Blue’, an adventurous story of a young lieutenant, Sebastian, who struggles through many hardships for his tormented old father and his lover, Carole. Furthermore, plans, suspense, lust, and jealousy provide a divergence from the loving atmosphere of Paris.

Sattva Rajas Tamas: Legend Of Kanishka, The Commoner-King And His Crusade Of Faith

Sattva Rajas Tamas: Legend Of Kanishka, The Commoner-King And His Crusade Of Faith

Circa 800 BC: Merit or birth? Meritocracy or dynastic monarchy? King Sarthak of the mighty kingdom of Manukeshwar faces this great dilemma in naming his successor. The contenders to the throne are the upright and virtuous Kanishka, son of a learned Rishi, and his own firstborn, the selfish and arrogant Prince Jaivant. Breaking centuries of oppressive tradition, the King names the valorous commoner as heir. Humiliated and aggrieved, Jaivant bides his time. Using age-old deceit and treachery, he succeeds in usurping the throne. But he does not anticipate the resolve of the ascetic warrior. The stage is set for a mighty struggle. Through an interlinked web of events and emotion, through love, envy, deceit and romance, the book tells the story of a crusade to restore dharma in a kingdom afflicted by despotic dynastic rule. Sattva Rajas Tamas is the story of powerful opposing forces. It is also the tale of a man’s remarkable resolve to keep fighting for truth and justice, to never give up. The ancient tale has disconcerting parallels in our modern times. Though the times have changed, the conflict between dharma and adharma has not.

Shades In Shadows - A Collection Of Short Stories

Shades In Shadows - A Collection Of Short Stories

The book presents a collection of eight short stories. The themes are diverse and reflect the myriad dimensions of life, and attempts to sketch the experiences of the protagonists. The stories build on the belief that while life's mysterious ways have left us all befuddled, its journey is rarely smooth or proceeds on predicted lines for many of us, often casting dark shadows on our efforts to take it in directions we favour. Sudden surprises, unexpected successes and disappointments seem to appear, like shades of grey within the black of the shadows. It is perhaps these shades that have made life exciting and worth fighting for. This collection titled as Shades in Shadows embodies the spirit of the glorious uncertainties of life.

The Coup India Missed - A Political Quest Through The Fantasies Of Statecraft

The Coup India Missed - A Political Quest Through The Fantasies Of Statecraft

In this nimble political satire, readers are presented with an alternative India that is at once mesmerising yet unfamiliar. Under the rippling tide of satire flows the strong undertow of serious political discourse. We are drawn irresistibly into the book as obstinate Indian politicians challenge the intrepid Baba to fight elections and enter Parliament to enact his anti-corruption law. The people of India pick up the gauntlet and in the General Elections that follow, they catapult his greenhorn political party into power. Baba appoints a maverick politician, Professor Murthy, as Prime Minister, to lead the country. Under Murthy, the country sees revolutionary change, both to its economy, as well as its political structure. An amended Constitution brings in the Presidential form of government. The revamped education sector becomes the driving force of the country’s socio-economic renaissance. India becomes a developed country with a potent military and world presence. As Pakistan-sponsored terrorism continues to hurt Kashmir, the Indian armed forces move in to bring the RAW-incited freedom struggle to its logical end. Baluchistan, Sindh and the Pakhtunkhwa, become independent countries. The world applauds as the cradle of terrorism is destroyed forever. A book that reflects the ideas that live in the minds of Indian citizens, like grass seeds sown by the wind.

The Gods, Demons And People Of Kunhimangalam

The Gods, Demons And People Of Kunhimangalam

A writer’s journey in search of the identity and uniqueness of the realm, quite often leads him to the unforeseen conditions of human life. In that sense this novel presents a reading experience quite distinctive and impressive. When the author narrates the chequered history of Kunhimangalam, through his glittering characters with an envious sleight of hands, the story of the village splays over a large canvas of two millenniums, beginning from the pristine Christian era to the futuristic scenes of twenty first century. During this unhindered entourage on time, we can feel the flair of the bucolic life, both in the constitution of the characters momentarily glowing and disappearing in a fraction of second and the composition of the black sarcasm permeating in between the story lines.

The need to earn a livelihood, a passion to create that doesn’t always pay and luck, which holds her ransom till it turns. Also, God who doesn’t help slay her demons, about life that shows an uncanny ability to sort itself out and hope, which if nothing else, doesn’t abandon her side. This book is about the intriguing path life takes in order to bring one to something as simple as one’s own self. *** “I so appreciate Soorina’s thoughtfulness and her many insights about love. Is there any place for someone as unconventional as Roma Mathur among the esteemed and sophisticated faculty at the prestigious International School? Has Jacob Roderick made a grave mistake in recruiting someone who plays drums, watches Tom and Jerry beat up Goons in the pub, and rides a sports bike, over the gold medalist, experienced teachers who had applied? What was it the school needed at this desperate hour? It is time for the students of RIS to take a call on what kind of teachers they need in their classrooms.

63 Rejections

63 Rejections

The book ‘63 Rejections,’ is aimed at a demographic catering to all ages and professions. It describes my journey in setting up a self-sufficient and bootstrapped venture—Ethereal Machines. It speaks of the chucklesome, tense, nervous, and dejected moments in setting up the startup. Engineering students have been engulfed in the fire of the desire of establishing their own startup. The true entrepreneurial spirit drives a lot of them, but a huge chunk wants to take this route purely for acquiring fame and money. In this rat race, there are, a lot of casualties. The biggest casualty belongs to the category of ideas, which aren’t deep-rooted in the virtual-platform-based service providers’ foundation. Several graduates are reluctant to venture into other fields because of the deficit of the short route to media coverage and a quick buck. I write this book at a time when the startup culture is abundant and defines a new pop culture. The book paints a picture for engineering graduates, who are looking to venture into fields apart from coding, about the difficulties that they will face. It also speaks about the boundless joys one experiences after breaking even and setting up a sustainable endeavor, and the new challenges that show up at their doorstep. It’s not just for engineering graduates; the book also caters to the mindset one requires to begin any kind of venture.

The Science Redemption is based on two sets of stories. The first part describes the lives of six individuals, Aditya, Sneha, Pallavi, Siddharth, Priyanka and Vivek, and six different romances involving them, in the setting of urban India in the 1980s to early 2000s. The second part is set over a thrilling 46 hours in 2028 AD. It describes a battle between the scientific revelation team with Dipti on one side versus perhaps the longest-lasting religious cult in the world on the other. As the battle takes place, Dipti stumbles upon astonishing historical facts ranging from 5500 BC to 2010 AD and turns almost all the stories described in part one of the book on their heads.

Of Rumours Lived And Told

Of Rumours Lived And Told

• On a lazy Sunday afternoon, after a lunch of succulent pork and chilled beer, Andrea settles down with her uncle and aunt to retell family stories of Akkai, a Roman Catholic nun (and Andrea’s great-aunt), who died under mysterious circumstances. • This gets Andrea thinking about the lives of the other nuns in the family – like bold and brassy, salsa-dancing great-aunt Deidre, who left the convent to be the Principal of a college; others soft and steely like Akkai, and the don-like Stella Marie, a nursing superintendent. • Andrea realizes these women have played a large part in the architecture of her childhood in the Mangalorean Catholic community of Bangalore. • As she talks to family members about the nun-aunts, Andrea unearths some peculiar and quirky aspects. Through whispered stories in the family, she comes to appreciate the porous convent walls the nun-aunts and the family navigate. • But she also encounters unexpected reticence from some of the family, whose memories of the nun-aunts are somewhat differently textured. • This richly human memoir tells the story of how a young girl finds her way through a flood-tide of recollections and emotion to navigate the tricky shoals of family ties, in an effort to bring closure to the family past.

An Ode To Shimla

An Ode To Shimla

Sanjeev Bansal’s exquisite poems are epistles to the past, reflections upon the future and heartbreaking meditations upon the metaphysics of daily transcendence. One of the most subtly imaginative poets, Bansal bravely transcribes his love for the hilly terrains of Shimla into the charged intersections of love and rejection, nature and religion, loss and renewal. His poems are lucid snapshots developed in a subtle amalgam of memory and intuition. Lyrical and linguistically inventive and yet faithful to poesy of European gloom, Bansal investigates complex personal history, family and romantic love in carefully sculpted lines, thereby making his poetry an odyssey at once metaphorically and emphatically real.

‘Myriad Musings’ is a charming collection of reflections on varied hues of life. But when it comes to love we allow our heart to take the final decision, not allowing the mind to play its due role. From there on begins a journey of conflict, misinterpretations and misunderstandings. Mr Right is either missed or mistaken for Mr Wrong. Nisha Chandra, a strong headed girl, is lost in the same dilemma. Every time she meets a guy, she ends up realising that he is Mr Wrong. The Trial By Fire : Memoirs Of A College Principal

The Trial By Fire : Memoirs Of A College Principal

"This autobiography is a rare story of the courage and the conviction of a person holding a position of power and authority, taking on the high and the mighty, refusing to buckle under pressure and do what is unethical and illegal, risking his career time and again. The author had a journey in defiance-fighting relentlessly against the corrupt system. During his two decades long tenure, he had to quite often face ‘the trials by fire’ in order to secure his college with a solid foundation of perennial values, transparency and commitment to truth. The autobiography is in four parts. Part I- Blissful ignorance- narrates the life of a rustic village boy and how he transformed. Part II- Awakening- is about the author’s struggle to find meaning and purpose for existence and becoming a teacher by accident. Part III- Rise- is regarding his appointment as the Principal, the conspiracy to scuttle the appointment and his legal battles. Part IV-Turbulence- is about his uninterrupted nerve-racking duel with multiple authorities to reinstate the truth and justice and protect the institution of Principal. And by taking a high moral ground and displaying mental toughness, he weathered a turbulent period of calculated verbal assaults aimed at making him dispirited and crippled. This is the first time that such an autobiography is penned by the Head of any educational institution, giving a gripping account of his torrid times. The book makes an interesting and inspirational reading. It is rich, engaging and very truthful. The heads of educational institutions, particularly the future generation of academic administrators will profit by the book."

"The lift door opened. She immediately pressed the 10th floor button again without walking out of it. People were surprised to see her again in office. But she didn’t talk to anyone this time. She straight way went to her desk, opened the computer and went through the projects in last 10years. There were not many. She checked all of them several times. She paused at number 3. It was about an excavation in Assam, Shivsagar near Brahmaputra valley. There was also a list of people working on it. She went through it many times but couldn’t find Surath’s name in the list. She was disappointed a bit. But in the end it was written in bold-Extra Hand (voluntary worker)- 1 She took a printout and circled it in red. She walked out of the office. She was afraid. She knew Surath was in danger. She must find him fast. She called her travel agent, “Please book a ticket to the nearest airport to Shivsagar, Assam for today”. “I am coming son,” Lucy told herself. Support comes from the most unlikely source imaginable. • The joy of long awaited baby Aastha’s birth is mercilessly expunged by the news of a genetic disorder with no cure. With these and other riveting real life stories about the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, YOLO presents a relatively unexplored perspective of medical treatment and recovery. It highlights the mind-body link, mystical healing, and spontaneous remissions, which do happen, reinforcing the greater truth that the human mind is perhaps the biggest pharmacy and the power of faith and hope can indeed move mountains. Drawing from her rich professional experience and personal life, Dr. Aroskar addresses fundamental questions like: Why are some people more prone to disease than others? Why does the same treatment heal one and fail another? How can one remain relentlessly optimistic and resilient when confronted by daunting challenges? How does one stay strong in the face of adversity? She also addresses the doctor-patient relationship, the dilemma of euthanasia; and panaceas for ailments. Despite path-breaking progress and technological innovations, medicine remains an imperfect science. Epoch-making discoveries have pushed the boundaries of human capabilities to fight disease, but like a hydra-headed monster, new challenges keep springing up every day. Is the mind then the ultimate saving grace of humankind? A deeply engrossing and enlightening book..."

1400 Bananas, 76 Towns & 1 Million People

1400 Bananas, 76 Towns & 1 Million People

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson in Travels with a Donkey Few of us have the panache to put in our papers, free ourselves from our desks, and take off on a half-year-long trip along the coastal necklace of peninsular India. This richly-flavoured travelogue combines adventure, serendipity, food, and sheer joie de vivre. The narrative irresistibly draws us in as benevolent observers of the many facets and foibles of humanity. Living out of a backpack, in budget lodgings, and eating bananas as a staple, only add to the heady challenges that stimulate the spirit of wanderlust of this maverick-explorer. The tour diary, starting from the remote north-western coastal tip and climaxing, rather precariously, way above sea-level at the potentially sinister Indo-Tibetan border, is an engrossing chronicle of discoveries about the desires, views, tribulations, joys, and sheer zest for living, of the teeming millions of India. Thrown in for good measure, in a refreshingly tongue-in-cheek style, are recipes for some of the gastronomic delights offered in the places traversed. Itinerant sidelights about people of all classes and creeds – fishermen, seafarers, rickshaw-drivers, priests, salesmen, radicals, typical and atypical families, and all the rest – create a colourful kalaidescope that is quintessentially India. This book is as enjoyable and energising as a good cup of chai...
